Pipe freezing in hospital and facility mechanical rooms: when an ice plug beats a drain-down

A failed valve on a riser forces a choice: drain the building or isolate one section. Pipe freezing is the second option. Here is how it works and what to share before the call.

A failed valve on a chilled water riser or a domestic water main in a hospital creates a hard choice. Drain the system and take service away from the building, or find a way to isolate one section. Pipe freezing is that second way.

The Koppl crew fits a freeze jacket around the pipe and runs liquid nitrogen through it. The liquid inside the pipe freezes into a solid plug that holds system pressure during the work downstream. When the repair is done, the plug thaws under control and the line returns to service.

Where facility managers use it

  • Replacing a valve that no longer closes.
  • Adding a valve or a branch where none exists.
  • Repairing a leaking joint without draining the riser.
  • Working on a section when the system's isolation valves are missing, buried or seized.

Hospitals, schools, high-rise buildings and plants use the method for one reason. A full drain-down takes the building offline, and refilling and flushing take time the facility does not have.

What decides whether a freeze fits

  • Pipe material and size.
  • The liquid in the line, and whether flow can be stopped. A freeze needs still liquid.
  • Operating pressure and temperature.
  • Access around the pipe for the jacket and the nitrogen supply.
  • Distance from the freeze point to the work.

Koppl reviews pipe condition, material and operating conditions before confirming a freeze. Suitability depends on the pipe, the liquid, the operating conditions and the repair scope. A service overview is not approval for a specific line.

What the crew monitors

The freeze is monitored from start to finish. Temperature at the jacket and system pressure confirm the plug has formed and is holding before the downstream work begins. The plug stays under watch for the whole job, then thaws under control.

  • Photographs of the pipe section and the space around it.
  • Pipe size and material.
  • What the line carries and its operating temperature.
  • Whether flow can be stopped during the work.
  • The work you need done and the window you have.
