Create controlled isolation

Line Stopping

Temporarily isolate a section of active pipe so modifications or repairs can move forward with less system-wide disruption.

Method in context

Control the work. Protect continuity.

A line stop creates a temporary control point in an operating pipeline. Koppl combines the fitting, temporary valve, hot tap, actuator, stopping head, bypass requirements, and completion sequence into one field plan.

Where the method creates value

  • Create temporary isolation when existing valves cannot provide the needed control
  • Keep a wider system operating through a planned bypass when required
  • Address common pipe materials from carbon steel and ductile iron to PVC and concrete pressure pipe
  • Complete the work with a sealed completion plug and blind flange

Common applications

  • Planned tie-ins
  • Valve replacement
  • Leak and joint repair
  • Pipeline relocation
  • Bypass operations
  • Emergency isolation

The technical-review boundary

Published sizes, pressures, temperatures, and equipment capabilities describe potential operating ranges, not automatic approval for a specific project. Final feasibility depends on verified line data, field condition, system configuration, media, procedures, and the selected equipment.

Typical project sequence

A field plan with visible control points.

The exact method changes by application. These four stages show the decision structure that keeps engineering, equipment, field work, and completion connected.

01

Plan the isolation

Define the work zone, flow requirements, line condition, stopping method, bypass needs, and the downstream scope.

02

Install and tap

Install and test the line stop fitting and temporary valve, then make the required hot tap.

03

Set the stopping head

Mount the actuator and insert the selected stopping head into its controlled sealing position.

04

Restore the line

Remove the stopping head after downstream work, set the completion plug, remove temporary equipment, and close the fitting.

Safety + validation

Method before mobilization.

A usable plan connects the actual line data to equipment selection, fitting design, access, testing, operating limits, PPE, work-zone controls, and the final return-to-service sequence.

Service questions

Useful answers before the call.

These answers frame the method. A project-specific answer starts with the actual line and site conditions.

Browse all FAQs
01Can line stopping avoid a system-wide shutdown?

It can create a temporary isolation point so targeted work proceeds without shutting down the entire system. Some projects require a bypass to maintain flow.

02What is a barrel-style line stop?

It is a stopping method that seals on the opening made by the hot tap. It can be useful when internal scale, corrosion, or uncertain inside diameter makes another head style less suitable.

03Is the fitting left on the pipe?

The completion plug seals the fitting after the stopping equipment is removed, and a blind flange completes the installation.

Related capabilities

The final method may combine services.

Live-line projects often connect tapping, temporary isolation, permanent control, fabrication, or repair into one coordinated sequence.

01

Hot Tapping

Add a branch connection to an operating pipeline and maintain service across the wider system.
